How S355J0WP Weather Resistant Steel Forms a Patina
When exposed to alternating wet and dry conditions, S355J0WP Weather Resistant Steel initially develops an orange-brown oxide layer. The layer gradually becomes darker and more compact, reducing the penetration of oxygen and moisture and slowing subsequent atmospheric corrosion.
Patina formation depends on rainfall, drying, ventilation, orientation and surface drainage. Bare S355J0WP corten steel is not recommended without engineering evaluation in coastal, high-chloride, permanently wet, submerged or poorly ventilated locations.

S355J0WP weathering steel can be cut, bent, drilled and welded using properly qualified procedures. Cutting and forming parameters should be determined according to plate thickness, bend direction, minimum bending radius and required edge quality.
Welding procedures should consider joint restraint, heat input, preheating and the required corrosion resistance of the weld metal. Matching weathering-steel welding consumables may be used for exposed welds where consistent patina appearance is required.
