What Is S355J0WP Structural Weathering Steel?
S355J0WP steel is a high-strength structural weathering steel produced according to EN 10025-5. It has a minimum yield strength of 355 MPa, a tensile strength of 470–630 MPa for common plate thicknesses, and an impact energy of at least 27 J at 0°C.
Compared with ordinary carbon steel, S355J0WP weathering steel contains copper, chromium and phosphorus, which help it develop a protective patina under suitable atmospheric conditions.

Specification of S355J0WP steel
S355J0WP steel belongs to the European weather-resistant structural steel system. It is mainly supplied as hot-rolled plate, sheet, strip or coil for exposed architectural components and outdoor steel structures.

Chemical Composition of S355J0WP atmospheric corrosion resistance steel
The atmospheric corrosion resistance of S355J0WP weathering steel comes from its controlled alloy composition. Copper and chromium contribute to the development of a compact rust layer, while its phosphorus-alloyed composition distinguishes it from grades such as S355J0W.
| Element | Typical EN 10025-5 limit |
|---|---|
| Carbon (C) | ≤0.12% |
| Silicon (Si) | ≤0.75% |
| Manganese (Mn) | ≤1.00% |
| Phosphorus (P) | 0.060–0.150% |
| Sulfur (S) | ≤0.035% |
| Chromium (Cr) | 0.30–1.25% |
| Copper (Cu) | 0.25–0.55% |
| Nickel (Ni) | ≤0.65% |
| Nitrogen (N) | ≤0.009% |
Chemical composition values may vary with the applicable standard edition and product specification. The heat analysis shown on the EN 10204 3.1 certificate should be used for final acceptance.
Mechanical Properties of S355J0WP Structural Steel
S355J0WP steel provides structural strength as well as atmospheric corrosion resistance. Its yield strength decreases slightly as plate thickness increases, so thickness must be considered during structural design.
| Nominal thickness | Minimum yield strength | Tensile strength | Minimum elongation |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.5–<2 mm | 355 MPa | 510–680 MPa | 14% |
| 2–<2.5 mm | 355 MPa | 510–680 MPa | 15% |
| 2.5–<3 mm | 355 MPa | 510–680 MPa | 16% |
| 3–16 mm | 355 MPa | 470–630 MPa | 20% |
| >16–40 mm | 345 MPa | 470–630 MPa | 20% |
These values are general reference data. Mechanical testing direction, specimen dimensions and impact-test applicability should follow the purchase specification.
How Does S355J0WP Weathering Steel Form a Protective Patina?
When exposed to alternating wet and dry conditions, S355J0WP weathering steel initially develops an orange-brown oxide layer. With continued exposure, the rust layer becomes darker and more compact, reducing the penetration of water and oxygen and slowing further corrosion.
This process depends on climate, drainage, orientation and ventilation. S355J0WP corten steel should not be assumed to remain maintenance-free in coastal, high-chloride, permanently wet or continuously submerged environments. Coating or additional corrosion protection may be required in these conditions.
Main Applications of S355J0WP Corten Steel
S355J0WP corten steel is mainly selected for thin and medium-thickness exposed products that require both structural strength and a naturally weathered appearance. Common applications include:
- Architectural facades and exterior wall panels
- Railway vehicles and container components
- Chimneys, ducts and outdoor equipment enclosures
- Light structural components exposed to the atmosphere

For heavy load-bearing structures, unusually thick plates, low-temperature service or severe marine exposure, the material selection should be confirmed by the project engineer.
S355J0WP Steel Compared with S355J0W Steel
The fundamental difference is that S355J0WP steel uses a higher-phosphorus alloy system and is mainly associated with thinner architectural and fabricated products. S355J0W contains less phosphorus and is generally available over a broader thickness range for structural applications.
| Comparison | S355J0WP steel | S355J0W steel |
|---|---|---|
| Phosphorus content | 0.060–0.150% | ≤0.035% |
| Yield strength, t≤16 mm | ≥355 MPa | ≥355 MPa |
| Impact energy | ≥27 J at 0°C | ≥27 J at 0°C |
| Product tendency | Thin and medium products | Wider thickness range |
| Typical use | Facades, containers and decorative components | Bridges, frames and load-bearing structures |
Processing and Welding of S355J0WP Steel
S355J0WP steel can be laser cut, plasma cut, bent, drilled and welded. Processing parameters should be selected according to the actual thickness, bend direction, minimum bend radius and surface-quality requirement.

For welded structures, the welding procedure should consider heat input, joint restraint, preheating requirements and the corrosion resistance of the weld metal. Matching weathering-steel consumables can be used when exposed welds must develop an appearance close to the base material.
