S355J0WP Corrosion resistant Steel For Bridge Construction

Aug 25, 2026 Leave a message

S355J0WP steel is an EN 10025-5 structural weathering steel with a minimum yield strength of 355 MPa and improved resistance to atmospheric corrosion.

It can be used for selected bridge components, particularly thin or medium-thickness secondary members, parapets, enclosures and architectural elements.

However, S355J0WP weathering steel is not automatically suitable for every bridge: plate thickness, welding, fatigue, impact toughness, chloride exposure and drainage must be evaluated by the bridge engineer.

What Is S355J0WP Weather Resistant Steel?

S355J0WP Weather Resistant Steel is a phosphorus-alloyed structural steel produced according to EN 10025-5. It contains controlled amounts of copper, chromium and phosphorus, which help form a compact protective patina during repeated wet-and-dry exposure.

S355J0WP Steel Specifications for Bridge Components

The final requirements must follow the ordered standard edition, plate thickness and bridge project specification.

Chemical Composition of S355J0WP Weathering Steel

The atmospheric corrosion resistance of S355J0WP weathering steel is related to its alloy composition. Copper and chromium promote the formation of a stable patina, while its relatively high phosphorus content distinguishes it from S355J0W steel.

Element Typical EN 10025-5 limit
Carbon, C ≤0.12%
Silicon, Si ≤0.75%
Manganese, Mn ≤1.00%
Phosphorus, P 0.060–0.150%
Sulfur, S ≤0.035%
Chromium, Cr 0.30–1.25%
Copper, Cu 0.25–0.55%
Nickel, Ni ≤0.65%
Nitrogen, N ≤0.009%

These are general reference limits. Final acceptance should be based on the heat analysis recorded in the mill test certificate.

Mechanical Properties of S355J0WP Steel Plate

Nominal thickness Minimum yield strength Tensile strength Minimum elongation
1.5–<2 mm 355 MPa 510–680 MPa 14%
2–<2.5 mm 355 MPa 510–680 MPa 15%
2.5–<3 mm 355 MPa 510–680 MPa 16%
3–16 mm 355 MPa 470–630 MPa 20%
>16–40 mm 345 MPa 470–630 MPa 20%

For applicable thicknesses, S355J0WP steel provides at least 27 J impact energy at 0°C. Bridges exposed to lower temperatures commonly require a grade with impact testing at a lower temperature, subject to project design requirements.

Why Use S355J0WP Weather Resistant Steel in Bridges?

S355J0WP Weathering Steel Reduces Coating Requirements

In a suitable environment, the protective patina of S355J0WP weathering steel can reduce dependence on full paint systems. This may lower repainting frequency and simplify maintenance for accessible secondary bridge components.

S355J0WP Steel Provides 355 MPa Structural Strength

The 355 MPa minimum yield strength allows S355J0WP steel to be used in structural components where strength and atmospheric corrosion resistance are both required. Final plate thickness must still be calculated according to loads, fatigue and stability.

S355J0WP Corten Steel Creates a Natural Bridge Appearance

The brown patina of S355J0WP corten steel can integrate bridge components with rural, mountainous and urban landscapes. Its appearance changes during weathering, so surrounding concrete and paving should be protected from early-stage rust runoff.

Suitable Bridge Applications for S355J0WP Steel

Because S355J0WP steel is mainly associated with thin and medium-thickness products, it is more commonly considered for selected secondary or architectural bridge components than for very thick primary members.

Typical applications may include:

  • Bridge parapets and protective screens
  • Equipment enclosures and inspection housings
  • Fascia panels and architectural cladding
  • Walkway edges and non-primary supporting parts
  • Signs, decorative panels and landscape bridge elements
  • Selected thin welded components approved by the engineer

For main girders, heavily welded connections, fatigue-critical details or low-temperature bridges, S355J2W or another project-approved bridge weathering steel may be more appropriate.

Welding S355J0WP Steel for Bridge Construction

S355J0WP steel can be welded, but its phosphorus-alloyed composition requires controlled welding procedures. The procedure should consider plate thickness, carbon equivalent, joint restraint, hydrogen control, heat input and service temperature.

For exposed bridge welds, compatible weathering-steel consumables may be required so that the weld metal provides suitable mechanical properties, corrosion resistance and visual consistency. Welding procedure qualification should follow the bridge project specification.

S355J0WP Steel vs S355J2W Steel for Bridges

Comparison S355J0WP steel S355J2W steel
Minimum yield strength, t≤16 mm 355 MPa 355 MPa
Minimum impact energy 27 J at 0°C 27 J at −20°C
Phosphorus system Higher-phosphorus grade Lower-phosphorus grade
Typical product tendency Thin and medium products Wider thickness range
Typical bridge selection Secondary and architectural parts Main or welded structural members, subject to design

The comparison does not mean that one grade can directly replace the other. The bridge designer must approve the material based on temperature, thickness, welding, fatigue and environmental exposure.
