Chemical Composition of S355J0WP Steel
The chemical composition of S355J0WP steel is designed to provide both mechanical strength and atmospheric corrosion resistance.
| Element | Typical EN 10025-5 limit |
|---|---|
| Carbon, C | ≤0.12% |
| Silicon, Si | ≤0.75% |
| Manganese, Mn | ≤1.00% |
| Phosphorus, P | 0.060–0.150% |
| Sulfur, S | ≤0.035% |
| Chromium, Cr | 0.30–1.25% |
| Copper, Cu | 0.25–0.55% |
| Nickel, Ni | ≤0.65% |
| Nitrogen, N | ≤0.009% |
These values are general reference limits. Final acceptance should be based on the heat analysis recorded in the mill test certificate.
Mechanical Properties of S355J0WP Weathering Steel
S355J0WP weathering steel provides 355 MPa-class structural strength, but its yield strength and elongation requirements vary with product thickness.
| Nominal thickness | Minimum yield strength | Tensile strength | Minimum elongation |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.5–<2 mm | 355 MPa | 510–680 MPa | 14% |
| 2–<2.5 mm | 355 MPa | 510–680 MPa | 15% |
| 2.5–<3 mm | 355 MPa | 510–680 MPa | 16% |
| 3–16 mm | 355 MPa | 470–630 MPa | 20% |
| >16–40 mm | 345 MPa | 470–630 MPa | 20% |
For applicable thicknesses, S355J0WP steel has a minimum Charpy V-notch impact energy of 27 J at 0°C. Projects operating below 0°C may require a grade with lower-temperature impact testing.
Advantages of S355J0WP Structural Steel
S355J0WP Steel Provides Structural Strength
With a minimum yield strength of 355 MPa for thicknesses up to 16 mm, S355J0WP steel can be used for outdoor components requiring both load-bearing capacity and atmospheric corrosion resistance.
S355J0WP Weathering Steel Can Reduce Coating Maintenance
In suitable environments, bare S355J0WP weathering steel can reduce dependence on conventional paint systems. This may lower repeated surface preparation and repainting requirements during service.
S355J0WP Corten Steel Provides a Natural Appearance
The surface of S355J0WP corten steel gradually changes from dark grey to orange-brown and then to a darker brown patina. This appearance is widely used in architecture and landscape design.
Applications of S355J0WP Weathering Steel
S355J0WP weathering steel is mainly suitable for thin and medium-thickness outdoor structural or decorative components, including:
- Architectural facades and exterior wall panels
- Railway vehicles and container components
- Chimneys, ducts and equipment enclosures
- Selected bridge and infrastructure components
- Light outdoor structural components
For heavy load-bearing structures, thick welded members, fatigue-critical details or low-temperature service, material selection should be confirmed through engineering calculations.

Processing and Welding of S355J0WP Steel
S355J0WP steel can be laser cut, plasma cut, bent, drilled and welded. Processing parameters should be selected according to plate thickness, bend direction, minimum bending radius and dimensional tolerance.

The welding procedure should consider joint restraint, heat input, hydrogen control, preheating and required weld performance. Compatible weathering-steel consumables may be selected for exposed welds requiring similar corrosion resistance and patina appearance.
Common Supply Sizes of S355J0WP Steel Plate
| Product item | Common commercial range |
|---|---|
| Thickness | Approximately 1.5–40 mm |
| Width | Approximately 1,000–2,500 mm |
| Length | Approximately 2,000–12,000 mm |
| Surface | Mill finish, shot-blasted or pre-weathered |
