Differences between S355J0W steel and S355J0WP steel

The fundamental difference between S355J0W steel and S355J0WP corten steel is phosphorus content and applicable thickness.

 

S355J0WP weathering steel contains 0.060–0.150% phosphorus and is mainly used for thinner architectural or fabricated components, while S355J0W contains no more than 0.035% phosphorus and covers a wider thickness range for structural applications.

 

Both grades have a minimum yield strength of 355 MPa and a minimum impact energy of 27 J at 0°C.

What Is S355J0WP Steel?

S355J0WP steel is a phosphorus-alloyed structural weathering steel manufactured according to EN 10025-5. It has a minimum yield strength of 355 MPa and combines structural strength with improved atmospheric corrosion resistance.

 

S355J0WP weathering steel is mainly used for thin and medium-thickness products, including architectural facades, decorative screens, railway vehicles, containers, chimneys, sculptures and landscape structures.

 

What Is S355J0W Steel?

S355J0W steel is a structural weathering steel specified in EN 10025-5. It also has a minimum yield strength of 355 MPa but contains less phosphorus than S355J0WP steel and is generally available in a wider thickness range.

 

S355J0W weathering steel is more commonly used for bridges, building frames, towers, supporting members and other outdoor load-bearing structures.

Although their basic mechanical properties are similar, S355J0WP weathering steel should not be regarded simply as S355J0W with an extra letter. Its phosphorus-alloyed composition and typical thickness range make it a distinct material option.

The increased phosphorus content is the defining compositional feature of S355J0WP steel. Together with copper and chromium, it supports the formation of a compact protective patina under alternating wet-and-dry exposure.

For applicable thicknesses, S355J0WP weathering steel requires a longitudinal Charpy V-notch impact energy of at least 27 J at 0°C. The final requirements should follow the ordered EN 10025-5 edition and mill certificate.

 

Applications of S355J0WP Weathering Steel

S355J0WP corten steel is commonly used for architectural facades, decorative screens, railway vehicles, containers, chimneys, sculptures and landscape structures. Its combination of 355 MPa yield strength and weathering performance makes it particularly suitable for thin and medium-thickness exposed components.

 

S355J0W is generally more suitable when the project requires thicker plates or heavier load-bearing components. If the service temperature is below 0°C, S355J2W or S355J2WP may be considered because they require 27 J impact energy at −20°C.

 

We supplied 70 tons of S355J0WP steel to a customer in Algeria for an outdoor construction project. The order included S355J0WP weathering steel plates manufactured according to EN 10025-5, with dimensions and cutting services customized to the customer's drawings.

 

Before shipment, the plates were inspected for chemical composition, mechanical properties, dimensions and surface quality. An EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate was supplied with the order. The S355J0WP corten steel plates were protected with moisture-resistant wrapping, secured by steel straps and shipped by sea to Algeria.

S355J0WP steel can be cut, bent and welded using appropriate procedures. Welding consumables should be selected according to plate thickness, structural restraint, heat input and required atmospheric corrosion resistance. Matching weathering-steel consumables are recommended for visible welds.

 

The protective patina of S355J0WP weathering steel requires alternating wet and dry cycles. Bare use should be evaluated carefully in coastal, high-chloride, permanently wet or poorly ventilated environments.
