Why choose ASTM A387 GRADE 5 CLASS 2 ?

Jan 07, 2026 Leave a message

ASTM A387 Grade 5 Class 2 is a high-quality, chromium-molybdenum (Cr-Mo) alloy steel plate designed for weldable pressure vessels and boilers used in high-temperature environments, offering superior strength, heat resistance, and corrosion resistance (pitting, oxidation, etc.) compared to lower classes, with specific mechanical properties like higher tensile strength (515-690 MPa) and yield strength (310 MPa).

Applications

1.Manufacturing critical pressure-bearing equipment such as pressure vessels, industrial boilers and heat exchangers, which are widely deployed in the oil and gas extraction, petrochemical processing and thermal power generation industries; these components are required to withstand long-term operation under elevated temperature and high-pressure conditions, and the material's stable mechanical properties ensure equipment safety and reliability.

2.Producing high-temperature and high-pressure piping systems for transporting corrosive media or high-temperature fluids; these piping systems are suitable for harsh working scenarios like refinery reactor outlets, steam pipeline networks and chemical fluid delivery lines, effectively adapting to extreme pressure and temperature fluctuations.

3.Fabricating core components for sour gas environments (e.g., natural gas extraction wells, gas gathering stations and sour oil processing units); leveraging its excellent resistance to hydrogen embrittlement and sulfide stress corrosion cracking (SSCC), the material can resist the erosion of hydrogen sulfide and other corrosive gases, extending the service life of components in such harsh environments.

Advantages

Outstanding high-temperature performance: Quenched and tempered heat treatment ensures stable tensile strength (515–690 MPa) and yield strength (minimum 310 MPa) under long-term elevated-temperature and high-pressure loads.

Strong corrosion resistance: Optimized Cr-Mo alloy composition provides effective resistance to hydrogen embrittlement and sulfide corrosion, suitable for corrosive media scenarios.

Good processability: Possesses excellent weldability and formability, facilitating the fabrication of complex-shaped equipment and lowering production difficulty.

Flexible specifications: Conventional thickness ranges from 5 mm to 150 mm, with customizable width and length to meet diverse engineering requirements.

International standard compatibility: Has equivalent materials in European, Japanese, and German standards (e.g., EN 10028-2 10CrMo5-5), enabling flexible material substitution in cross-border projects.

What material is grade 5 steel?

Grade 5. Manufactured from medium carbon steel and hardened for greater strength and durability, a grade 5 bolt is distinguished by 3 radial lines and promises tensile strengths between 105,000 and 120,000 psi. They are most commonly found in automotive applications or those that require medium strength.

What is the ASTM A387 equivalent to?

Among the ASTM A387 Grade 22 equivalent steel grades, SA387 Grade 22, 10CrMo9-10 is more popular than other equivalents. SA387 Grade 22 steel is under ASME SA387/ SA387M standard. The chemical performance and technical requirements of SA387 Grade 22 steel is almost same with ASTM A387 Grade 22 steel.
