What is the difference between 304 and A36 Carbon Steel H beam

Nov 17, 2025 Leave a message

ASTM A36 and JIS SS400 are two of the most commonly used hot-rolled structural carbon steels, widely applied in H beams, I beams, plates, sheets, and other general structural sections. Although they originate from different national standards, their performance in practical engineering applications is very similar.

ASTM A36
Standard: ASTM A36 / A36M (USA)

SS400
Standard: JIS G3101 (Japan)

For most construction and machinery projects that require A36 carbon steel H-beams, SS400 is generally considered an equivalent grade, offering nearly the same performance in welding, forming, and fabrication.

Chemical Composition Comparison (A36 vs SS400)

Grade C (t ≤ 16mm) Si Mn P max S max Cu
ASTM A36 0.26 max 0.40 max - 0.040 0.050 0.20 min
SS400 - - - 0.050 0.050 -

🔹 Summary:
Both steels have low carbon content, making them suitable for welding H beams, mechanical machining, and bending.
Minor differences in composition do not affect the typical use-case for structural A36 H Beams.

Mechanical Properties Comparison

Grade Yield Strength ReH (min, N/mm²) Tensile Strength Rm (N/mm²) Elongation (%)
ASTM A36 250 400–550 23
SS400 245 400–500 21

🔹 Summary:
The performance difference is very small. In normal structural projects, both steels behave almost the same when used as H-beams, channels, angles, and plates.

Is SS400 Equivalent to ASTM A36 for H Beams?(针对产品做的结论)

Yes.
JIS SS400 is widely accepted as the equivalent material to ASTM A36, especially for hot-rolled H-beams used in:

building structures

support frames

industrial fabrication

machinery platforms

welded assemblies

In real applications, A36 H Beam and SS400 H Beam can typically serve the same purpose unless the project requires strict chemical composition control or specific country standard compliance.

When Should You Choose ASTM A36 H Beam Over SS400?

Choose ASTM A36 H Beam if:

you are supplying to the U.S. market or American-standard projects

the drawing strictly requires ASTM A36

copper content is required for improved corrosion resistance

higher elongation is preferred for safety or fabrication

Choose SS400 H Beam if:

you are supplying to Asian markets

JIS standard is required

cost optimization is important

For global projects, A36 and SS400 are generally interchangeable after confirming mechanical properties.
