The I-beam is a type of mild steel with an I-shaped cross-section. It consists of two horizontal flanges and a vertical web that connects them. The design of an I-beam allows it to support heavy loads and distribute weight evenly over long spans.
Beams such as H-piles, Universal beams (UB), W-beams, and broad flange beams all seem tohave the same qualities as l-beams. However, l-beams are distinct in a few subtle ways fromthese other types of beams. Some subtle distinctions should be brought to your attention, even though they all have an l-shaped cross-section and the word "universal" implies thatthey have a broad range of applications.
I-beams: l-beams have flanges that are parallel to one another. These flanges can have atapered appearance at times. In comparison to H-piles and W-beams/wide flange beamsI-beams have legs that are much narrower in diameter. As a consequence of this, they cansupport a lesser load and are offered in shorter lengths, reaching a maximum of 100 feet, incontrast to H-piles and W-beams, which can support a span of up to 330 feet. S beams canalso take the form ofl-beams.
W-beams: W-beams, sometimes referred to as broad flange beams, which are very much likeH-piles, differ from l-beams in that their legs are much broader. On the other hand, the thickness of the web and the flanges are not always the same.
