What Is the Difference Between S355JR and S355J0 Steel?
S355JR steel and S355J0 steel are non-alloy structural steel grades specified in EN 10025-2. They have essentially the same minimum yield strength and tensile strength. The main difference between S355JR and S355J0 steel is their specified Charpy impact test temperature.
S355JR structural steel requires a minimum impact energy of 27 J at +20°C, while S355J0 structural steel requires at least 27 J at 0°C. Therefore, S355J0 is generally selected when a project requires verified toughness at a lower temperature.
Both grades can be supplied as H beams, I beams, steel plates, channels, angles and other hot-rolled structural sections.

What Is S355JR Structural Steel?
S355JR steel is a weldable structural steel grade with a minimum yield strength of 355 MPa for thicknesses up to 16 mm. Its tensile strength is generally 470–630 MPa for commonly supplied structural thicknesses. The "JR" designation indicates a minimum Charpy V-notch impact energy of 27 J at +20°C.
For projects without a specified low-temperature toughness requirement, S355JR structural steel is often a practical and economical choice.
What Is S355J0 Structural Steel?
S355J0 steel is also manufactured according to EN 10025-2 and has essentially the same nominal strength level as S355JR. However, S355J0 must achieve a minimum impact energy of 27 J at 0°C.
This makes S355J0 H beam suitable for structures where the purchasing specification or engineering design requires verified impact toughness at 0°C.
S355J0 should not automatically be described as steel for extremely cold climates. If impact performance below 0°C
The Main Difference Between S355JR and S355J0 H Beam
The principal difference between S355JR and S355J0 H beam is not their section size or basic load-bearing strength. It is the temperature at which their impact toughness is verified.
| Comparison | S355JR H Beam | S355J0 H Beam |
|---|---|---|
| Yield strength | Same nominal grade level | Same nominal grade level |
| Tensile strength | Generally the same range | Generally the same range |
| Impact energy | Minimum 27 J | Minimum 27 J |
| Test temperature | +20°C | 0°C |
| Relative toughness requirement | Room-temperature test | Lower-temperature test |
| Typical selection | General construction | Projects specifying 0°C impact toughness |
For example, an HEB 120 beam manufactured from S355JR and an HEB 120 beam manufactured from S355J0 have the same nominal section dimensions and theoretical weight. The difference lies in the steel grade and certified impact performance.
Chemical Composition of S355JR and S355J0 Steel
S355JR and S355J0 have similar chemical compositions. However, S355J0 generally has tighter maximum limits for phosphorus and sulfur.
| Element | S355JR Maximum | S355J0 Maximum |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon, C | 0.24% | 0.24% |
| Silicon, Si | 0.55% | 0.55% |
| Manganese, Mn | 1.60% | 1.60% |
| Phosphorus, P | 0.045% | 0.040% |
| Sulfur, S | 0.045% | 0.040% |
| Nitrogen, N | 0.012% | 0.012% |
| Copper, Cu | 0.55% | 0.55% |
These are general maximum values and may vary with product thickness, steelmaking method and the applicable standard edition. The actual composition must be confirmed on the EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate.
Are S355JR and S355J0 Steel Interchangeable?
S355JR and S355J0 should not be treated as automatically interchangeable.
S355J0 may meet a more demanding impact-temperature requirement, but substitution still requires approval because the project specification may define:
- Exact steel grade
- Impact test temperature
- Delivery condition
- Carbon equivalent
- Welding requirements
- Inspection document
- Third-party inspection
- National construction regulations
If the drawing specifies S355J0 H beam, replacing it with S355JR without written engineering approval may result in non-compliance.

How to Choose Between S355JR and S355J0 H Beam
Choose S355JR H beam when:
The structure operates mainly at normal ambient temperatures.
The project requires general EN 10025-2 structural steel.
No 0°C impact test is specified.
Availability and purchasing cost are important.
Choose S355J0 H beam when:
The project specification requires 27 J impact toughness at 0°C.
The structure is installed outdoors or in a cooler environment.
Verified impact performance is required on the MTC.
The engineer or customer specifically specifies S355J0.
The final grade should be selected according to the minimum design temperature, load conditions, section thickness, welding procedure and applicable construction code.
