Why is tool steel so strong?

Tool steel has a high carbon content, generally more than 0.5% by weight. The function of carbon is to generate carbides in the matrix of steel, thereby increasing the hardness of the steel. This carbide increases the material's wear resistance, making it harder and stronger.

 

Tool steel generally contains chromium, vanadium, tungsten, molybdenum and other elements. They are of great significance in improving the wear resistance, hardness and toughness of steel. For example, chromium can enhance corrosion resistance, while tungsten and molybdenum can enhance hardness and enhance wear resistance.

 

Using high-precision heat treatment technology, tool steel can have high strength and hardness. Tool steel is generally heated to a certain temperature and then quickly hardened using a cooling medium such as oil or water. This rapid cooling "freezes" the atomic makeup of the steel, making it harder. Subsequent tempering (at a lower temperature) achieves a balance of hardness and toughness, resulting in a stronger and more durable steel.
