1. Core Differences
| characteristic | H-beam | I-beam |
|---|---|---|
| Flange design | Wide and parallel, uniform thickness | Narrow and tapered on the inside, with a gradual thickness |
| Web thickness | Usually thicker | Relatively thin |
| Moment of inertia of area | Bigger (stronger against bending) | Smaller |
| weight | Heavier at the same length | Lighter |
2. Strength comparison
(1) Bending strength (lateral load)
Steel beam h is stronger: the wide flange makes the stress distribution more uniform, suitable for large-span beams (such as factory main beams and bridges).
For example: at the same weight, the bending resistance of h beam steel structure is about 20%~30% higher than that of I-beam.
(2) Compressive strength (vertical load)
Structural steel beam is stronger: the thick web and wide flange provide higher compressive stability, suitable for columns (such as high-rise steel structure columns).
I-beam is prone to local buckling and requires additional reinforcement.
(3) Torsional strength (torsion force)
Both are weak, but I-beam is slightly better; the inclined flange design makes I-beam have a certain resistance to slight torsion, but severe torque requires the use of box section.
3. How to choose?
Scenarios where h-shaped steel beam is preferred:
Long-span structures (≥10 meters)
High loads (such as heavy factories and bridges)
Buildings with high seismic requirements
Scenarios where I-shaped steel is preferred:
Lightweight design (such as residential lofts)
Short-span (<6 meters) secondary beams
Cost-sensitive projects
