Several surface treatments are suitable for A572 I - beams, depending on the application environment. Hot - dip galvanizing is a popular choice, especially for outdoor applications. By immersing the I - beams in molten zinc, a thick, protective zinc layer is formed. This layer acts as a physical barrier, preventing moisture and oxygen from reaching the steel surface, and provides sacrificial protection, as zinc corrodes preferentially when the coating is damaged. This makes it highly effective for structures like outdoor bridges, transmission towers, and exposed building frames that are constantly exposed to the elements.​

Painting is another common treatment. Anti - rust primers are first applied to protect the steel from corrosion, followed by topcoats with specific properties. In industrial environments with chemical exposure, chemical - resistant paints are used to safeguard the I - beams.
