What is S890QL

Dec 23, 2025 Leave a message

S890QL is a structural steel grade with an even greater yield strength than S690QL. The material serves as a great option for procurers who wish to promote high strength in a cost effective way. Due to the characteristics of the steel, clients can use this material in numerous applications resulting in a leaner build whilst still maintaining great strength.
S890QL is a water quenched & tempered steel which complies with the EN10025:6:2004 specification.
Please refer to the technical details below referring to S890QL.

Grade : S890QL
Number: 1.8983
Classification: Alloy special steel with specified minimum values of impact energy at temperatures not lower than -40 ° C
Standard:
EN 10025-6: 2004 Hot rolled products of structural steels. Technical delivery conditions for flat products of high yield strength structural steels in the quenched and tempered condition
EN 10137-2: 1996 Plates and wide flats made of high yield strength structural steels in the quenched and tempered or precipitation hardened conditions. Delivery conditions for quenched and tempered steels

Depending on the thickness of the product and the manufacturing conditions, the manufacturer may add to the steel one or several alloying elements up to the maximum values given in order to obtain the specified properties
Nb, Ti, V, Zr: There shall be at least 0.015% of a grain-refining element present. AL is also one of these elements. The minimum content of 0.015% applies to soluble aluminium, this value is regarded as attained if the total aluminium content is at least 0.018%; in case of dispute the soluble aluminium content shall be determined

What is the meaning of S890QL grade and its applicable standard?

It's an EN10025-6 structural steel. "S"=structural steel, "890"=890MPa yield strength, "Q"=quenched-tempered, "L"=low-temperature toughness.

What are the key chemical and mechanical property indicators of S890QL?

C≤0.19%, P≤0.020%, S≤0.010%; ReH≥890MPa, Rm=940-1100MPa, -40℃ impact energy ≥30J.

What are the requirements for delivery condition and surface quality of S890QL?

Delivered quenched-tempered; no harmful defects like cracks. Special requirements need to be specified in the contract.

What processing methods suit S890QL and what precautions should be taken?

Flame/plasma/laser cutting available; preheat before welding, control cold bending radius, stress relief annealing optional.

In which fields is S890QL mainly applied?

It's widely used in heavy machinery, bridge construction, oil derricks, port cranes and mining equipment under harsh conditions.

What is the core difference between S890QL and S890Q?

S890QL has "L" for low-temperature toughness (-40℃), while S890Q only meets 0℃/-20℃ impact requirements.
