S500Q (often S500QL) is an ultra-high-strength, quenched and tempered structural steel with a minimum yield strength of 500 MPa. It is the next performance grade above S460Q, designed for the most demanding, weight-critical applications where maximum strength is non-negotiable.
Key Facts at a Glance:
| Property | Specification |
|---|---|
| Standard | EN 10025-6 (Quenched & Tempered Steel) |
| "S" Meaning | Structural |
| "500" Meaning | 500 MPa Minimum Yield Strength (for thickness ≤ 16mm) |
| "Q" Meaning | Quenched & Tempered (heat treatment) |
| "L" (in QL) | Low Temperature toughness guaranteed |
| Key Feature | Extreme strength-to-weight ratio |
| Corrosion Resistance | None - it is NOT stainless. Requires painting/coating. |
Primary Uses:
S500Q is used where reducing weight is as critical as bearing extreme loads. Its applications are more specialized than S460Q:
Advanced Mobile Machinery:
Highest-capacity crane booms and jibs.
Critical components in mining excavators and draglines.
Lightweight, high-strength chassis for special transport vehicles.
High-Performance Structural Components:
Hybrid bridge girders in the most highly stressed sections.
Articulations and connections in major cable-stayed or suspension bridges.
Advanced roll-over protection (ROPS) for heavy equipment.
Specialized & Military Applications:
Components for armored vehicles (where S500Q is used structurally; harder grades like S700Q are used for ballistic armor).
Lifting gear in offshore and wind energy installation.
Prefabricated rapid-deployment systems where airlift weight limits are severe.
Comparison with S460Q:
Strength: S500Q is stronger (500 MPa vs. 460 MPa yield).
Toughness: Both offer excellent low-temperature toughness (typically tested at -40°C or -60°C).
Application: S500Q is used when S460Q's strength is insufficient or where further weight savings are paramount. It is rarer, more expensive, and more challenging to fabricate than S460Q.
Fabrication: Welding requires even stricter procedures (pre-heat, specific electrodes, controlled heat input) due to its higher hardenability and greater risk of cracking.
Summary:
S500Q is a niche, ultra-high-performance steel. It is the material of last resort when no other structural steel provides enough strength without making the component too heavy. Its use is justified only in extreme engineering applications where its high cost and fabrication challenges are offset by critical performance gains.
