What is Q690D

Dec 25, 2025 Leave a message

As a star product in the low-alloy high-strength structural steel family, Q690D has become an irreplaceable core material in many industrial fields by virtue of its balanced strength, toughness and processability. Different from extreme cold-resistant Q690E and other grades, it is more tailored to the needs of conventional cold and heavy-load scenarios. It has shown strong applicability in engineering machinery, energy equipment and infrastructure construction. The following is a detailed interpretation from multiple dimensions such as performance characteristics, technical optimization, application expansion and practical application tips.

Parameter Details and Standard Compliance: The Foundation of Stable Performance

Q690D adheres to the Chinese standard GB/T 16270 - 2019, and each part of its grade coding directly reflects the core performance indicators. The "Q" stands for yield strength, the "690" indicates that the minimum yield strength is 690MPa when the plate thickness is ≤50mm, and the "D" grade clearly specifies that it must pass the Charpy V-notch impact test at -20℃, which is the key guarantee for its safe use in cold regions. In terms of chemical composition, it adopts a low-carbon and micro-alloyed optimized formula. The carbon content is strictly controlled below 0.18%, which not only lays the foundation for high strength but also greatly reduces the risk of cold cracking during welding. The addition of niobium, vanadium and titanium micro-alloy elements forms a synergistic effect of precipitation strengthening and grain refinement. At the same time, the harmful elements phosphorus and sulfur are limited to ≤0.030% and ≤0.025% respectively. Some high-end products can even control them below 0.015%, effectively avoiding material embrittlement. In terms of mechanical properties, its tensile strength ranges from 770MPa to 940MPa, the elongation rate is not less than 14%, and the average impact energy at -20℃ is no less than 47J. This performance combination enables it to resist both heavy loads and sudden impact forces.

Application Expansion: From Core Components to Key Infrastructure

Q690D's cost-performance ratio and stable performance make it widely used in many fields, and it has become a key material to improve equipment performance and reduce overall costs.

  • Engineering machinery field: It is the preferred material for core bearing parts of heavy equipment such as Sany Heavy Industry and XCMG. When used to make crane booms and excavator arms, compared with traditional Q345 steel, the thickness of components can be reduced by 20 - 30% on the premise of the same load-bearing capacity. This lightweight design not only improves the operation flexibility of the equipment but also reduces fuel consumption during operation.
  • Energy equipment field: In oil and gas exploitation, Q690D seamless pipes are used as high-pressure oil well casings and shale gas fracturing pipelines, which can withstand the high pressure of underground strata and the corrosion of stratum fluids. In the wind power industry, it is used to make wind power tower connectors and flange parts. It can resist the cyclic load of wind power generation for a long time, and the service life is increased by more than 30% compared with ordinary steel.
  • Infrastructure field: In large-span bridges such as some urban viaducts and intercity railway bridges, Q690D is used for chord members and diagonal members of truss structures. It reduces the number of supports while ensuring the bearing capacity of the bridge and simplifies the construction process. In addition, it is also used in the frame of heavy trucks and the core supports of high-rise steel structure buildings, which improves the anti-seismic and wind-resistant performance of the structures.

How does the thickness of Q690D affect its mechanical properties?

The mechanical properties of Q690D show a gradual downward trend with increasing thickness. For plates with thickness ≤50mm, the minimum yield strength is 690 MPa and tensile strength ranges from 770–940 MPa. When thickness is 50<t≤100mm, the minimum yield strength decreases to 650 MPa, and tensile strength drops to 760–930 MPa. This is because thicker plates have slower cooling rates during rolling, leading to coarser internal grains. To compensate for this performance decline, manufacturers usually adopt quenching and tempering heat treatment for thick Q690D plates to homogenize the microstructure and ensure stable toughness.

What are the typical application scenarios of Q690D steel?

Q690D is widely used in heavy-duty engineering fields that require high strength and moderate low-temperature resistance. Typical applications include:

  • Construction machinery: Crane booms, concrete pump truck outriggers and excavator bucket rods, achieving 20–30% weight reduction compared with conventional steels.
  • Energy equipment: Wind turbine tower flanges, oil drilling platform pipe racks and high-pressure oil well casings, withstanding cyclic loads and cold outdoor environments.
  • Infrastructure: Truss components of large-span bridges, main frames of high-rise steel structure buildings and seismic support parts in cold regions.
  • Heavy-duty vehicles: Frames and axles of heavy trucks and large flatbed transport vehicles, improving load-bearing capacity and durability.

What quality inspection standards must Q690D meet before leaving the factory?

Q690D must pass a series of strict inspections in accordance with GB/T 1591-2018 and GB/T 16270-2019 standards, including:

  • Chemical composition analysis: Verify that the content of carbon, manganese, microalloying elements and harmful elements (P≤0.030%, S≤0.025%) meets the standard requirements.
  • Mechanical property testing: Tensile tests, -20℃ impact tests and cold bending tests to ensure yield strength, impact energy and formability are up to grade.
  • Non-destructive testing: 100% ultrasonic testing (UT) for internal defects; magnetic particle testing (MT) or penetrant testing (PT) for surface defects of key components.
  • Dimensional accuracy inspection: Check plate thickness tolerance, flatness and surface quality to meet customer processing requirements.
