info-412-241

SA 204 Grade B is a pressure vessel steel plate grade specified under the ASME standards, designed for use in applications involving elevated temperatures. It is a carbon-manganese steel with additional alloying elements that enhance its strength and creep resistance, making it suitable for service in boilers, pressure vessels, and other heat‑exposing equipment. The material is typically supplied in the as-rolled or normalized condition and offers good weldability, allowing it to be easily joined using common welding processes. Its properties are tailored to provide reliable performance under high-pressure and high-temperature conditions, ensuring structural integrity and long-term durability in demanding industrial environments.

Treatment Method

1. Heat Treatment (Delivery Condition)

The processing method is primarily determined by the plate thickness:

Thickness ≤ 40 mm (1.5 in): Normally supplied in the As-rolled condition. However, they may be ordered as Normalized, Stress Relieved, or both.

Thickness > 40 mm (1.5 in): Must be Normalized to ensure grain refinement and improved mechanical properties.

2. Key Mechanical Properties

SA 204 Gr B provides enhanced strength at elevated temperatures compared to standard carbon steel:

Tensile Strength: 70–90 ksi (485–620 MPa).

Yield Strength: Minimum 40 ksi (275 MPa).

Elongation (in 2 in [50mm]): Minimum 17%–21% depending on thickness.

3. Chemical Composition

The addition of Molybdenum (0.45% – 0.60%) is the defining feature, providing superior creep resistance and strength at high temperatures.

4. Typical Applications

High-temperature pressure vessels.

Power plant boiler drums and headers.

Petrochemical heat exchangers and reactors.

What is the minimum tensile strength of SA 204 Gr B?

A4: The minimum tensile strength of SA 204 Gr B is 485 MPa, and the minimum yield strength is 260 MPa, ensuring sufficient load-bearing capacity in pressure environments.

What is the maximum service temperature of SA 204 Gr B?

It can be used continuously at a maximum temperature of 538°C. Beyond this temperature, its mechanical properties may degrade gradually, affecting service safety.

Is SA 204 Gr B easy to weld?

Yes, it has excellent weldability. No preheating is needed for thin plates, but preheating at 100-150°C is recommended for thick plates to prevent weld cracks.

What welding methods are suitable for SA 204 Gr B?

Suitable methods include shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), gas metal arc welding (GMAW) and submerged arc welding (SAW), which adapt to different structural welding needs.

Does SA 204 Gr B require post-weld heat treatment (PWHT)?

PWHT is usually required for thick plates or complex weldments. It relieves welding stress, improves weld toughness and ensures structural integrity.

What is the acceptance criterion for SA 204 Gr B weld defects?

Weld defects must comply with ASME Section IX. Cracks, incomplete fusion and other harmful defects are not allowed, and minor defects must be repaired.

Does SA 204 Gr B require surface quality inspection?

Yes, surface must be free of cracks, scratches and inclusions. Surface roughness and defects are inspected visually and by NDT methods.

Can SA 204 Gr B be coated with anti-corrosion layers?

Yes, coating with paint, galvanizing or other anti-corrosion layers can extend service life, especially in corrosive medium environments.

What is the service life of SA 204 Gr B under normal working conditions?

Under proper maintenance and normal working conditions, its service life can reach 15-20 years, depending on temperature, pressure and medium corrosion.

Is SA 204 Gr B recognized by international standards?

Yes, it is widely recognized globally. It is equivalent to EN 10028-2 P265GH in Europe and GB 713 Q245R in China in some application scenarios.
