The Specification of ASTM A252 Seamless Steel Pipe

Dec 01, 2025 Leave a message

ASTM A252 seamless or welded steel pipe is a nominal-wall thickness cylindrical pipe, widely used for pile foundations, structural supports, and marine applications. It can act as a permanent load-bearing member or as a shell to form cast-in-place concrete piles.

ASTM A252

Surface Quality

Surface imperfections deeper than 25% of the wall thickness are classified as defects.

Minor defects can be repaired by welding to ensure integrity.

Mechanical Properties

Property Grade 1 Grade 2 Grade 3
Tensile Strength (min, psi) 50,000 60,000 66,000
Yield Strength (min, psi) 30,000 35,000 45,000

Note: Grade 3 is the most commonly used for high-load applications due to its superior strength.

Chemical Requirements

Element Max Content (%)
Phosphorus (P) 0.050

Applicable for both seamless and ERW welded A252 steel pipes. Maintaining low phosphorus content ensures weldability and reduces brittleness.

Products Applications

Pile Foundations

Supports buildings, bridges, and heavy structures.

Can withstand loads up to 45,000 psi yield strength (Grade 3) and 66,000 psi tensile strength, suitable for high-rise foundations and heavy-duty construction.

Typical pipe diameters range from 12" to 48", lengths up to 12 meters or customized, accommodating a variety of soil and load conditions.

Marine and Offshore Structures

Used for docks, piers, and offshore platforms.

Corrosion resistance enhanced with coatings such as FBE, 3PE, galvanizing, ensuring long-term performance in saltwater environments.

Can endure cyclical marine loading and tidal forces, with proven service in offshore piling projects exceeding 20+ years.

Structural Construction

Load-bearing supports for industrial projects.

ASTM A252 pipes provide consistent wall thickness tolerance ±12.5% and outside diameter tolerance ±1%, ensuring reliable structural performance.

Supports high-pressure applications with controlled elongation (12–18%) depending on grade.

Key Features

High Strength & Durability

Grade 3 pipes: Yield Strength 45,000 psi, Tensile Strength 66,000 psi.

Suitable for demanding load-bearing conditions including bridge piers and deep foundation piles.

Weldability

Seamless and welded (ERW, SSAW, LSAW) options available.

Welded pipes can be repaired or joined with submerged arc welding, with weld reinforcement ≤ 1/4" outside diameter, maintaining structural integrity.

Versatility

Can be produced in seamless or welded forms, diameters from 12" to 48", wall thickness from 0.109" up to 2.5", lengths up to 12 meters or customized.

Supports a wide range of project needs: deep foundation, bridge construction, offshore platforms, industrial frameworks.

Corrosion Resistance

Can be coated with FBE, 3PE, epoxy, polyurethane, or hot-dip galvanization.

Designed for long-term use in marine, underground, or acidic soil environments.

Reduces maintenance frequency, extending service life by 10–20 years compared to uncoated steel pipes.
