What is the difference between beam and H-beam?
Ordinary beam: The term "beam" includes various shapes, such as I-beam, which is in the shape of an "I" with parallel upper and lower flanges and a vertical web. There are other types, such as U-channel steel and L-angle steel.
H-beam: Its cross-sectional shape is an "H" shape, with two parallel horizontal flanges connected by a vertical web in the middle. Compared with I-beams, the proportions of flanges and webs are more uniform.
Ordinary beam: It can be produced by a variety of methods such as hot rolling, cold rolling or welding. For example, some small I-beams or special-shaped beams may be made by cold bending or welding different steel plates.
H-beam: It is usually manufactured by hot rolling, which can ensure high dimensional accuracy and good mechanical properties. Welding is also used to produce H-beams, especially those with special requirements or large sizes.
Ordinary beam: The mechanical properties vary depending on the specific shape and size. For example, I-beams have good bending resistance in the plane of the web, but relatively poor torsion resistance and may have limited load-bearing capacity in some cases.
H-beam: It exhibits excellent bending resistance in all directions. It has a larger flange width and a more reasonable cross-sectional area distribution, resulting in a higher moment of inertia and section modulus. Therefore, it can withstand a larger load and has better stability and mechanical efficiency.
