Both A387 Grade 11 Class 1 (A387 Gr.11 Cl.1) and A387 Grade 11 Class 2 (A387 Gr.11 Cl.2) are pressure vessel plates made of Carbon alloy steel.

A387 Grade 11 Class 1
A387 Grade 11 Class 1 is a type of chromium-molybdenum alloy steel plate primarily intended for use in welded boilers and pressure vessels designed for elevated temperature service.
Chemical Composition (%) of A387 Gr.11 Stee
A387 Gr.11 Cl.1 and A387 Gr.11 Cl.2 have identical chemical composition requirements. The details are as follows:
| A387 Gr.11 | Carbon | Manganese | Phosphorus | Sulfur | Silicon | Chromium | Molybdenum |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Heat Analysis (Max %) | 0.05-0.17 | 0.4-0.65 | 0.025 | 0.025 | 0.50-0.80 | 1.00-1.50 | 0.45-0.65 |
Mechanical Properties of A387 Gr.11 Plates
For A387 Gr.11 Cl.2, the "Class" designation indicates two different tensile strength levels. A387 Gr.11 Cl.1 and Cl.2 have different tensile property requirements. The detailed mechanical properties highlighting the differences are:
| A387 Gr.11 | Tensile Strength ksi (MPa) | Yield Strength ksi (MPa) | Elongation (Min, %) | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| in 200mm | in 50mm | |||
| Cl.2 | 75-100 (515-690) | 45 (310) | 18 | 22 |
| Cl.1 | 60-85 (415-585) | 35 (240) | 19 | 22 |
Heat Treatment of A387 Gr.11 Steel
A387 Gr.11 alloy steel plates shall be thermally treated by either annealing, normalizing and tempering, or-when permitted by the purchaser-by accelerated cooling from the austenitizing temperature via air blasting or liquid quenching, followed by tempering. The minimum tempering temperature shall be 1150°F (620°C).
Applications of A387 Gr.11 Alloy Steel Plates
A387 Gr.11 Cl.2 steel is also a type of heat-resistant steel. It is commonly used in the petroleum and petrochemical industries, chemical equipment manufacturing, power station construction, and boiler and pressure vessel manufacturing.
Under the ASTM A387 specification, other grades include A387 Grade 5 Class 1, Grade 5 Class 2, Grade 9, Grade 12 Class 1, Grade 12 Class 2, Grade 22 Class 1, Grade 22 Class 2, and Grade 91. These grades have similar applications to A387 Gr.11 steel.
