ASTM A252 Grade 3 Steel Pipe is widely used for steel piling applications and structural pipe piles. Manufactured under the ASTM A252 specification, these pipes cover nominal (average) wall steel pipe piles of cylindrical shape.

ASTM A252 Grade 3 pipe piles are designed for applications in which the steel cylinder acts either as a permanent load-carrying member or as a structural shell for cast-in-place concrete piles.

Manufacturing Process

ASTM A252 Grade 3 pipe piles are produced using:

Electric Resistance Welded (ERW) process

Seamless pipe process

All welded pipe piles have longitudinal weld seams.

Steelmaking Process

The steel for Grade 3 piles is made using one or more of the following:

Open-hearth process

Basic-oxygen furnace

Electric-furnace process

Chemical analysis shall comply with ASTM A751 test methods and requirements.

ASTM A252 Grade 3 Permissible Tolerances

 

Weight

Each pile length shall be weighed individually. Acceptable variations:

+15% above theoretical weight

–5% below theoretical weight

Outside Diameter

OD may not vary more than ±1% from the specified OD.

Wall Thickness

Wall thickness cannot be more than 12.5% below the nominal value.

Length

Pipe piles shall be furnished as:

Single random lengths

Double random lengths

Uniform specified lengths

Permissible length variation:
±1 inch (±25.4 mm)
