Differences between ordinary and weather-resistant H-shaped steel for railway vehicles
The differences between ordinary H-shaped steel and weather-resistant H-shaped steel for railway vehicles are as follows:
Corrosion resistance: Weather-resistant H-shaped steel (such as 09CuPCrNi-A) contains alloying elements such as copper, phosphorus, and chromium, and a dense rust layer can form on its surface to resist atmospheric corrosion; ordinary H-shaped steel (such as Q345B) has weak corrosion resistance and relies on coatings for anti-corrosion.
Mechanical properties: The yield strength of both is ≥345MPa, but weather-resistant steel has better low-temperature toughness and environmental aging resistance, adapting to the long-term outdoor vibration and temperature differences of vehicles.
Application scenarios: Weather-resistant steel is suitable for components such as vehicle bodies and bogies in outdoor and harsh environments (coastal areas, industrial zones), reducing maintenance; ordinary steel is mostly used for indoor structural components with low corrosion risks.
Cost and maintenance: The initial cost of weather-resistant steel is 10%-20% higher, but its full life cycle cost is lower due to less anti-corrosion maintenance costs; ordinary steel requires frequent repainting, resulting in high long-term maintenance costs.

Outdoor atmospheric corrosion test

1. The two figures above show the 09CuPCrNi-A weather-resistant H-shaped steel produced in 2009.
2. The two figures below show the Q345B ordinary H-shaped steel produced in 2011.
Compared with Q345B ordinary H-shaped steel, 09CuPCrNi-A weather-resistant H-shaped steel adds alloying elements such as copper, phosphorus, chromium, and nickel. It can form a dense rust layer on the surface, and its atmospheric corrosion resistance is much higher than that of the latter, eliminating the need for frequent anti-corrosion treatment. The yield strengths of the two are similar, but 09CuPCrNi-A has better low-temperature toughness and environmental aging resistance. It is suitable for harsh environments such as open-air bridges and containers. Although its cost is slightly higher, its life-cycle maintenance cost is low, combining long-term durability and economy.
Outdoor atmospheric corrosion testing involves exposing materials to the natural atmosphere. The corrosion resistance is evaluated by long - term observation of corrosion morphology, weight loss rate, etc. Exposure sites are often set up in typical climate zones. This method can truly reflect the comprehensive corrosion effect of the natural environment and is often combined with accelerated testing to shorten the cycle.
