SM490A steel plate is a low-alloy, high-strength structural steel produced in accordance with the Japanese standard JIS G3106, offering a tensile strength (σb) of 490 MPa.
This high-performance steel combines excellent mechanical strength with good weldability, making it suitable for a wide range of demanding structural applications.

It is commonly used in buildings, bridges, ships, railway vehicles, oil storage tanks, containers, and other engineering projects where both strength and durability are critical.
The dimensions, shapes, weights, and allowable tolerances of SM490A steel plate are strictly controlled according to GB/T709 standards, ensuring consistency and reliability across all applications.
Chemical Composition (% by smelting analysis):
Carbon (C): ≤ 0.18 for thickness ≤ 50 mm; ≤ 0.20 for thickness > 50 mm
Silicon (Si): ≤ 0.55
Manganese (Mn): ≤ 1.60
Phosphorus (P): ≤ 0.035
Sulfur (S): ≤ 0.035
Delivery and Heat Treatment Conditions:
SM490A plates with thickness less than 80 mm are delivered in a hot-rolled condition, ready for immediate fabrication.
Plates with thickness 80 mm or greater are supplied in a normalized condition to ensure uniform mechanical properties throughout the thickness. The specific delivery condition, heat treatment temperature, and holding time are recorded in the Material Test Certificate (MTC) for full traceability.
Thanks to its high strength-to-weight ratio, excellent weldability, and stable mechanical performance, SM490A steel plate is a reliable and economical choice for engineers and fabricators in construction, infrastructure, and heavy machinery projects.
