ASTM A252 High Strength Low Alloy Steel Pipes

ASTM A252 is a standard specification for welded and seamless steel pipe piles used in structural and architectural construction. The standard includes three grades (Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 3), among which Grade 3 is the most commonly used due to its higher strength and broader engineering applicability.

Ends: Beveled or flat

Coating Options: FBE, 3PE, galvanized

ASTM A252 - Most Common Pipe Pile Material

ASTM A252 Grade 3 is the most widely used grade due to its superior mechanical strength. It can be manufactured as both seamless and welded, although welded types are more common for large-diameter applications.

Mechanical Properties:

Tensile Strength: 455 MPa (66,000 psi)

Yield Strength: 310 MPa (45,000 psi)

These properties make Grade 3 an excellent choice for heavy load-bearing and foundation applications.

Standard Scope of ASTM A252

ASTM A252 covers cylindrical welded and seamless steel pipe piles with nominal wall thickness. This standard does not apply to rectangular tubing.

Applications:

Bearing piles for foundational support

Load-bearing underground structures

Pipes filled with concrete at construction sites

Structural frameworks requiring axial capacity

The standard is originally written in inch-pound units but may also be converted to SI units for engineering reference.

Pipe Pile Manufacturing Types

1. Seamless Pipe Piles

Manufactured through:

Hot-rolled seamless process

Cold-drawn seamless process

Hot-expanded seamless process

2. Welded Pipe Piles

Common welded types include:

ERW: Electric Resistance Welded

LSAW: Longitudinal Submerged Arc Welded

SSAW / DSAW: Spiral Submerged Arc Welded

Chemical Composition & Mechanical Requirements

Chemical Limit:

Phosphorus (P): ≤ 0.050%
High phosphorus levels can cause brittleness and negatively affect welding performance.

Mechanical Tests Required:

Heat Analysis: Must be listed on the MTC (Mill Test Certificate).

Product Analysis:

Pipe <14 in: 2 samples per 200 pipes

14–36 in: 2 samples per 100 pipes

36 in: 2 samples per 3000 ft

Tension Test:

Must meet tensile and yield requirements of ASTM A252

If yield point is not clearly defined, yield strength is determined at:

0.2% offset, or

0.5% total extension under load

Dimensional & Weight Tolerances

Outer Diameter Tolerance: ±1%

Wall Thickness Tolerance: ±12%

Weight Tolerance: +15% / −5% of theoretical weight

Lengths:

SRL (Single Random Length)

DRL (Double Random Length)

Fixed lengths: 20 ft or 40 ft

Custom lengths available

Hydrostatic Test Requirement

Hydrostatic testing is NOT required under ASTM A252.
This is because pipe piles are primarily structural members that are usually filled with concrete rather than used for fluid transportation.
