ASTM A573 Structural Steel Plate For Storage Tanks

ASTM A573/A573M steel plates include Grades 58, 65, and 70, corresponding to different minimum tensile strength levels. These steel plates are structural carbon-manganese-silicon steel designed to provide enhanced notch toughness at room temperature while maintaining good weldability and formability.

Products Description

ASTM A573/A573M steel plates include Grades 58, 65, and 70, corresponding to different minimum tensile strength levels. These steel plates are structural carbon-manganese-silicon steel designed to provide enhanced notch toughness at room temperature while maintaining good weldability and formability.

Grade 58: Minimum yield strength 400 MPa (58 ksi), tensile strength 510–650 MPa, elongation ≥ 20%.

Grade 65: Minimum yield strength 450 MPa (65 ksi), tensile strength 585–720 MPa, elongation ≥ 18%.

Grade 70: Minimum yield strength 485 MPa (70 ksi), tensile strength 620–760 MPa, elongation ≥ 16%.

These steel plates are typically available in thicknesses from 6 mm to 150 mm, with widths ranging 1,500–3,000 mm and lengths up to 12,000 mm, making them suitable for structural components subjected to dynamic loads and moderate stress.

Applications of ASTM A573 Grade Steel Plate in Welded Bridge Structures

ASTM A573 grade steel plate is widely used in welded bridge structures due to its high strength, excellent weldability, and superior notch toughness at room temperature. Its carbon-manganese-silicon alloy composition provides the necessary mechanical properties to withstand static and dynamic loads, making it ideal for modern bridge engineering.

In bridge construction, A573 steel plates are commonly used for main girders, floor beams, cross frames, trusses, and stiffeners, where high yield strength (ranging from 400 to 485 MPa depending on grade) and tensile strength (510–760 MPa) ensure structural integrity under heavy traffic and environmental loads. The steel's elongation (≥16–20%) and good fracture toughness enable it to resist cracking and fatigue in welded joints, which is critical for long-span and high-traffic bridges.

The plates are typically available in thicknesses from 6 mm to 150 mm, widths 1,500–3,000 mm, and lengths up to 12,000 mm, providing flexibility for custom bridge designs and fabrication requirements. Due to their excellent machinability and weldability, A573 steel plates can be precisely fabricated into complex structural components, reducing construction time while maintaining safety and durability.

Overall, ASTM A573 grade steel plate is a reliable and cost-effective solution for welded bridge structures, combining strength, toughness, and ease of fabrication to meet modern engineering standards and long-term performance requirements.
