Tool Steel Product Introduction
W1 tool steel is a water hardened steel grade and one of the oldest tool steel grades. Despite advances in air and oil hardened grades, W1 is still very useful in applications requiring softer cores, high hardness and machinability, and relatively low cost.
With its shallow hardening and high toughness, W1 is one of the easiest grades to grind and machine. Due to its high carbon content, it can usually be used without further heat treatment. Common applications include: drills, cutters, collets, pipe cutters, forming dies, gauges, embossing dies, tension punches, bushings, forming rolls, and wood drills.
