By far the majority of PVQ steels consist of either carbon steel A516 or alloy steel A387, with A516 being the most widely used PVQ grade today. A516 is by far the most widely used PVQ grade, and the A516 grade offers many advantages in terms of price.
A516 is characterized by its ease of forming, welding and machining, and the grain structure of A516 is also quite good. In addition, A516 over 1.5 inches thick must be normalized to meet specifications. This additional heat treatment further improves grain structure and requirements, and often increases toughness.
