Yield Strength Difference
The first key difference between Q235 and Q275 steel plates lies in their yield strength. Q235 has a yield strength of 235 MPa, while Q275 has a higher yield strength of 275 MPa.
Both are ordinary carbon structural steels, where "Q" stands for yield point and the following number indicates the steel's yield value in megapascals.
Carbon Content and Tensile Strength
Q235 and Q275 also differ in carbon content and tensile strength. Q235 has a carbon content of 0.14–0.22% and a tensile strength of 375–500 MPa. Q275 has a higher carbon content, up to 0.37%, and a higher tensile strength of 410–560 MPa.
The higher carbon content of Q275 gives it better strength, making it suitable for more demanding mechanical applications.
Typical Applications
The two steel grades are used in different structural applications. Q235 is widely applied in general construction and engineering projects, such as building frames, workshop structures, high-voltage transmission towers, vehicles, boilers, containers, and ships.
In contrast, Q275 is preferred for components that require higher strength, including gears, shafts, sprockets, nuts, profile steel for agricultural machinery, and conveyor chains.
In short, Q235 steel offers good plasticity, weldability, and cost-effectiveness, making it ideal for general structural uses. Q275 steel provides higher strength and tensile performance, which makes it more suitable for components subjected to heavier loads or stricter mechanical requirements.
