Processes Adopted for SA517 Grade E

Steelmaking: Smelting & Refining: Adopts electric arc furnace (EAF) smelting combined with ladle refining (LF) and vacuum degassing (VD) processes. Strictly controls chemical composition, reduces harmful impurities (S, P ≤ 0.015%), and ensures uniform material purity and microstructure.

Hot Rolling: Controlled Forming: Implements controlled rolling technology at 1100–1200℃, with multi-pass rolling and precise temperature control. Optimizes grain refinement, improves material tensile strength and toughness, and ensures consistent thickness and surface quality of steel plates.

Heat Treatment: Normalizing & Tempering: Applies standard normalizing + tempering heat treatment. Normalizing at 890–920℃ for uniform austenitization, followed by air cooling; tempering at 620–680℃ to eliminate residual stress, adjust hardness (22–28 HRC), and balance mechanical properties.

Welding: Controlled Temperature & Annealing: Suitable for gas metal arc welding (GMAW), shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) and submerged arc welding (SAW). Requires preheating at 100–150℃, interpass temperature control ≤ 300℃, and post-weld stress relief annealing to ensure high-quality weld joints.

Cutting & Forming: Low-Deformation Processing: Compatible with oxy-fuel cutting, plasma cutting and laser cutting. Supports cold/hot forming (bending, rolling) at room temperature to 300℃, with minimal deformation and no obvious material embrittlement after processing.

Surface Treatment: Anti-Corrosion Preparation: Uses shot blasting and pickling processes to remove oxide scales and rust. Ensures good surface adhesion for subsequent anti-corrosion coating, enhancing resistance to industrial and marine corrosion.

What machining processes are suitable for SA517 Grade E?

It can be machined via turning, milling, drilling, and grinding. Using high-speed steel or carbide tools with proper cutting fluids is recommended to ensure machining efficiency and surface quality.

What is the delivery condition of SA517 Grade E?

It is delivered in the quenched and tempered (Q&T) condition. This ensures consistent mechanical properties, including high strength and toughness, meeting the requirements of pressure vessel applications.

What standards should be followed for SA517 Grade E welding?

Welding should follow ASME Section IX (Welding Qualifications) and AWS D1.1 (Structural Welding Code - Steel). Proper electrode selection (e.g., E11018-G) and process control are essential for quality welds.

What is the maximum operating temperature for SA517 Grade E?

Its maximum continuous operating temperature is around 450°C (842°F). Exceeding this temperature may cause a decrease in strength and toughness over time.

Is SA517 Grade E a carbon steel or alloy steel?

It is a low-alloy steel. Unlike carbon steel, it contains alloying elements (Cr, Mo, Ni) that enhance its strength, toughness, and heat resistance for high-pressure applications.

What is the elongation requirement of SA517 Grade E?

The minimum elongation at break is 16% (in 50 mm gauge length). This ductility ensures the material can deform plastically before fracture, enhancing structural safety.

What is the thermal conductivity of SA517 Grade E?

At room temperature, its thermal conductivity is about 45 W/(m·K) (26 Btu/(ft·h·°F)). This property is crucial for heat transfer calculations in boiler and heat exchanger designs.

What is the coefficient of thermal expansion of SA517 Grade E?

The linear thermal expansion coefficient is approximately 11.5 × 10⁻⁶/°C (6.4 × 10⁻⁶/°F) between 20°C and 600°C. It helps predict thermal deformation in high-temperature applications.

What is the reduction of area requirement for SA517 Grade E?

The minimum reduction of area is 40%. This parameter reflects the material's ability to deform uniformly under tension, indicating good ductility and toughness.
