info-420-545Main Application Fields

Petrochemical Pressure Vessels: Widely used in the manufacture of pressure vessels for oil refining, chemical processing and natural gas treatment equipment. It can store and transport crude oil, chemical reagents and other media, adapting to the pressure and temperature fluctuation scenarios in the processing and transportation of petrochemical products.

Boiler and Thermal Power Equipment: Suitable for key components such as drums and header manifolds of thermal power plants and industrial boilers. It can withstand high-temperature steam pressure for a long time and adapt to repeated cold and heat cycle conditions.

Medium Storage Tanks: Used in the manufacture of large storage tanks for hazardous media such as liquefied petroleum gas and corrosive liquids, as well as non-hazardous media such as water and finished oil, ensuring storage safety.

Marine and Low-Temperature Equipment: Can be used for offshore oil and gas development platform components, and medium-to-low temperature storage vessels (such as propane and ethylene storage tanks) with a temperature range of -60℃ to -73℃.

Application Conditions

Standard and Process Requirements: Must comply with the ASME SA-537/SA-537M standard, adopt quenching + tempering (tempering temperature ≥ 620℃) heat treatment process, and pass ultrasonic flaw detection (in line with ASME SA-578 Class 1).

Environmental Parameter Adaptation: The operating temperature range is suitable for -73℃ to medium-high temperature, the operating pressure can meet the working conditions within 500bar, and the thickness is ≤ 150mm (conventional supply ≤ 100mm).

Medium and Processing Requirements: Adapt to neutral to weakly corrosive media. For welding, the carbon equivalent must be controlled ≤ 0.57%, and standard welding processes can ensure joint performance.

Core Advantages

Excellent Mechanical Properties: Yield strength ≥ 380MPa (thin gauge), tensile strength 550-690MPa, elongation ≥ 22%, outstanding low-temperature toughness and strong brittle fracture resistance.

Good Machinability and Weldability: No special welding materials are required, it is suitable for conventional processing techniques, and maintains stable performance after heat treatment, which can meet the manufacturing needs of complex structures.

High Safety and Economy: Resistant to thermal fatigue and impact, with a long service life of equipment; compared with alloy steel, it has lower cost and higher cost performance, adapting to the general needs of multiple industries.

Comparison with Other Classes

Class 1: Supplied in a Normalized condition; has lower strength (Yield: 50 ksi).

Class 2: Also Quenched and Tempered but typically has higher strength (Yield: 60 ksi) and a lower minimum tempering temperature (1100°F) compared to Class 3.

Class 3: Provides a balance of higher tempering temperature for improved toughness and creep resistance at elevated temperatures compared to Class 2.

What is SA537 Class 3?

SA537 Class 3 is a carbon-manganese steel plate designed for pressure vessel applications. It is quenched and tempered, offering excellent strength, toughness, and weldability, suitable for low-temperature and high-pressure working environments.

What are the main chemical compositions of SA537 Class 3?

Its key chemical components include C (0.18-0.25%), Mn (1.00-1.60%), P (≤0.035%), S (≤0.035%), Si (0.15-0.40%), and trace amounts of Ni, Cr, Mo, ensuring its mechanical properties.

What is the minimum yield strength of SA537 Class 3?

The minimum yield strength of SA537 Class 3 is 345 MPa (50 ksi). This high yield strength enables it to withstand heavy loads and high pressure in pressure vessel operations.

What is the tensile strength range of SA537 Class 3?

Its tensile strength ranges from 485 MPa to 620 MPa (70 ksi to 90 ksi). This range ensures the material has good ductility and load-bearing capacity under tensile forces.

What heat treatment process does SA537 Class 3 undergo?

SA537 Class 3 undergoes quenching and tempering (Q&T) heat treatment. Quenching involves rapid cooling after heating to austenitizing temperature, followed by tempering to reduce brittleness and improve toughness.

What are the typical applications of SA537 Class 3?

It is mainly used in the manufacture of pressure vessels, such as oil and gas storage tanks, boiler drums, nuclear reactor components, and other high-pressure equipment.

Is SA537 Class 3 weldable?

Yes, SA537 Class 3 has good weldability. Proper preheating (usually 100-200°C) and post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) are recommended to avoid cold cracking and ensure weld joint toughness.

What is the maximum service temperature of SA537 Class 3?

The maximum service temperature of SA537 Class 3 is approximately 482°C (900°F). Beyond this temperature, its mechanical properties may degrade significantly.

What is the minimum service temperature of SA537 Class 3?

It can be used at a minimum temperature of -29°C (-20°F) for general applications. For lower temperatures, additional impact testing is required to confirm its toughness.

Which standard governs SA537 Class 3?

SA537 Class 3 is governed by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section II, Part A (SA Standards).
