Also known as atmospheric corrosion resistant steel, the corrosion resistance of weathering steel is based on the formation of a protective oxide layer, known as patina, on the surface of the steel. Under normal weather conditions, if the surface is alternately wet and dry, a patina will form in about 18-36 months.
The corrosion resistance of atmospheric corrosion resistant steels is superior to other structural steels in many applications. The surface rust layer becomes a compact oxide layer that slows down the corrosion process.
And weathering means that steel exhibits greater resistance to atmospheric corrosion than unalloyed steel due to its chemical composition. The corrosion inhibiting effect of the protective layer is produced by the nature of its structural composition and the specific distribution and concentration of alloying elements within it.
