S690Q – A structural high-strength steel with a minimum yield strength of 690 MPa, supplied in quenched and tempered (Q) condition, complying with the EN 10025-6 standard. This steel plate combines high strength with excellent toughness.

 

For thicknesses ranging from 6 to 150 mm, the tensile strength typically ranges from 770 to 940 MPa, elongation is 14–16%, and Charpy V-notch impact energy at -40°C exceeds 30 J, ensuring reliable toughness even in low-temperature environments.

 

S690Q

 

S690Q is commonly used in structures subjected to extreme loads, such as mining and heavy construction equipment, crane facilities, offshore drilling platforms, wind turbine support structures, as well as main beams of bridges and trestles.

 

The chemical composition is designed as a low-carbon alloy, with typical element contents: C ≤0.20%, Si ≤0.80%, Mn ≤1.70%, P ≤0.020%, S ≤0.010%, Cr ≤1.50%, Ni ≤2.00%, Mo ≤0.70%, V ≤0.12%, providing an optimal balance of strength, toughness, and weldability. This makes S690Q ideal for modern high-strength engineering applications, reducing structural weight, enhancing safety and durability, and lowering overall project costs.

Welding

 

S690Q steel is suited to welding done without preheating or subsequent heat treatment. It is organically weldable as its behaviour during and after welding depends not only on the material, but also on the sizes and shapes as well as the product operation conditions. The requirements for arc-welding must conform to the EN 1011-2 standard

 

As the product gauge and strength increase, cold-cracking may occur, caused by the following:

 

  • Large quantities of diffusing hydrogen in the weld-seam metal;

 

  • Significant tension-stress concentrations at the weld seam.

 

  • Fragile structure of the heat-affected zone;

1. Raw materials (scrap steel, pig iron and molten iron)
2. Electric furnace (100-ton electric arc furnace smelting), converter
3. LF furnace molten steel refining treatment
4. Vacuum treatment of molten steel in VD or VOD furnace
5. Die casting (a variety of key-type die casting lines) or continuous casting (large slab continuous casting machine); (one ingot remelting 50 tons slab type electroslag furnace)
6. Heating (continuous furnace and soaking furnace)
7. Steel plate rolling (4100 and 4200mm mills)
8. Heat treatment of steel plate (normalizing and tempering)
9. Steel plate cutting inspection
10. Storage
