ASTM A537 PVQ steel plate Product Introduction
The machinability and ductility of A537 is similar to that of ASTM A516, but its strength and hardness increase significantly with heat treatment. Like ASTM A516, ASTM A537 carbon steel can be normalized, but it can also be quenched and tempered (another heat treatment).
Quenching and tempering is a two-part process in which the steel is first heated to an extremely high temperature and cooled rapidly with water (quenching), then reheated to a temperature below critical and cooled at room temperature.
In addition to the strength imparted by the chemical composition, the heat treatment gives A537 steel grades higher yield and tensile strengths than A516 grades. As a result, A537 steel can withstand very high stresses, weights or energies before deformation or fracture.
