Universal Steel America stocks ASTM A572-42 steel plate with thicknesses from 4 to 6 inches in the as-rolled condition. Upon request, this material can be supplied in the normalized condition. Normalizing involves heating ASTM A572 steel plate Grade 42 to an elevated temperature before cooling at room temperature. This process improves ductility and toughness.

Average widths are 96 and 120 inches, whereas typical lengths are 240 inches. Width and length restrictions exist, depending on plate weight and mill capabilities.

ASTM A572-42 steel plate has a minimum yield strength of 50 kilopounds per square inch, or KSI, and a minimum ultimate tensile strength of 65 KSI. The presence of columbium and vanadium boosts its strength and microstructure, producing an excellent dispersion of alloy carbides in an almost pure ferrite matrix. This eliminates the toughness-reducing effect of pearlitic volume fraction while maintaining durability by refining the grain size.
