Stainless Steel 317 is intended to be a higher strength alternative to Grade 316. Composed of high amounts of chromium, nickel and molybdenum, SS 317 is also more corrosion resistant than 316 and tougher than 304. This is due to the high iron content in its composition, which is much higher than many stainless steels. The combination of this iron and the chromium-nickel-molybdenum content produces a strong and durable alloy.
In terms of workability, all common welding, hot and cold working practices can be applied. 317 shows good versatility. It only hardens with cold working, which also increases its strength. When heat treating this metal, the temperature should not drop below 1700°F, as this is the threshold of response.
