The alloying elements of wear-resistant steel are one of the things that make it more wear-resistant than other steels, and it employs several alloys to increase wear resistance. Carbon, for example, helps increase the hardness and strength of steel; chromium and manganese can help reduce wear; and heat treatment is another factor in steel's resistance to wear.
A common wear-resistant steel is AR400. "400" denotes the Brinell hardness value. AR450 and AR500 are similar to AR400, with the difference that they have a higher Brinell hardness value. Although AR400 has a lower Brinell hardness value, it is more formable. All three wear-resistant steels are used in mining equipment, cement casting, molding equipment, excavating equipment and conveyor systems.
