A709 GR.50 HM CARBON STEEL H BEAM are made of rolled steel and have longer flanges and a thicker web than I beams. Although it looks like a single piece of steel, an H beam actually features a bevel where three pieces of metal come together. In contrast, I beams are composed of a single piece of steel not welded or riveted together. I beams have tapered edges, and their cross sections are taller than their width.

This specification covers carbon and high-strength low alloy steel structural shapes, plates and bars, and quenched and tempered alloy steel for structural plates intended for use in bridges. Heat analysis shall be used to determine the percentage of carbon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, silicon, and copper for the required chemical composition. A tension test shall be used to determine the required tensile properties such as tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation.
