To be considered a marine steel, the material must be able to resist the corrosive effects that are common in the water environment. For this reason, special alloying elements are added to these steels to resist corrosion.
While most carbon steels are not suitable for marine environments, some marine-grade carbon steels have been approved by the American Bureau of Shipping for shipbuilding applications.
