Weathering steels, often referred to by the generic trademark COR-TEN steel and sometimes written as corten steel (without the hyphen), are a group of steel alloys designed to eliminate the need for painting and to develop a stable rusted appearance after years of exposure to the weather.
The most practical benefit of weathering steel is its resistance to corrosion. When exposed to moisture, air, and other elements, most low alloy steels have a tendency to rust. Over time, the rust layer becomes porous and peels away from the surface of the metal.
It takes up to 6 months for the surface of weathering steel to oxidize, but surface treatments can accelerate the oxidation of weathering steel to as little as 1 hour.
