S355J2WP Weathering Steel Features
Refers to low alloy structural steel with a protective rust layer that is resistant to atmospheric corrosion and can be used to manufacture steel structures such as vehicles, bridges, towers, containers, etc. Compared with ordinary carbon steel, weathering steel has better corrosion resistance in the atmosphere. Compared with stainless steel, weathering steel has only trace alloying elements, such as phosphorus, copper, chromium, silver, aluminum, silver, thiabium, titanium, etc. The total amount of alloying elements accounts for only a few percent, unlike stainless steel, which reaches more than ten percent, so the price is relatively low.
S355J2WP Weathering Steel Principle
After adding trace elements such as phosphorus, copper, chromium, and silver to steel, a dense and highly adherent protective film is formed on the surface of the steel, which prevents rust from spreading and developing inward, protects the substrate under the rust layer, and slows down its corrosion rate. The amorphous quartz oxide layer with a thickness of about 50 μm to 100 μm formed between the rust layer and the substrate is dense and has good adhesion to the substrate metal. Due to the existence of this dense oxide film, oxygen and water in the atmosphere are prevented from penetrating into the steel substrate, slowing down the development of rust into the depth of the steel material, and greatly improving the atmospheric corrosion resistance of the steel material. Weathering steel is a steel system that can be used in a thinner, exposed or simplified coating manner, making the product corrosion-resistant and life-extending, labor-saving and consumption-reducing, and upgrading. It is also a steel system that can be integrated into the new mechanisms, new technologies, and new processes of modern metallurgy to enable its continuous development and innovation.
