A36 A572GR50 U Channel Steel

ASTM A36 Steel Plate is one of the most common grades of steel used in structural applications. This mild carbon steel grade contains chemical alloys that give it properties such as machinability, ductility, and strength that are ideal for use in constructing a variety of structures. ASTM A572 GR 50 is a high strength low alloy steel. Grade 50 is difficult to form since it contains more alloying elements than plain steel but offers more strength per unit of weight. Owing to its high strength ASTM A572 Grade 50 Plates requires less material to satisfy strength requirements than plain carbon steel.

Products Description

Difference Between A36 and A572 Steel

Chemical Composition

The A36 steel grade comprises Carbon, Manganese, Phosphorus, Sulfur, and Silicon. The carbon content is usually kept to a minimum of 0.25%, while the maximum manganese content is 1.2%. The chemical composition of A572 steel is almost similar to that of A36 but with a higher yield strength of up to 50 ksi. Also, the A572 steel grade includes small amounts of Columbium, Vanadium, and Nickel.

Yield Strength

A36 steel grade yields 36 ksi, while A572 grade 50 yields a strength of 50 ksi. This means that A572 steel has a more impressive carrying capacity and overall strength. The increased strength of A572 steel makes it more suitable for bigger projects and structures.

Tensile Strength

The tensile strength of the A36 steel grade is between 58-80 ksi, while that of the A572 grade 50 is between 65-90 ksi. This means that A572 grade 50 steel is stronger than A36 steel, which adds to the material's load-bearing capacity and durability.

Applications

The A572 steel grade is commonly used in construction, high-strength bolted connections and transportation infrastructure. On the other hand, A36 steel is mostly used in small to medium-sized projects that don't require high strength and durability. It's widely used to construct buildings, bridges, and industrial machinery.

I-Beams H-Beams
I-Beams are steel beams fabricated by milling or rolling steel in an I-shape. It is made of a single piece of metal or aluminum throughout the unit. H-Beams are steel beams made of rolled steel in the shape of the alphabet "H." They are fabricated as built-up units. The flanges are welded to the web to form the H-section. H-beams are also called wide flange beams.
The web of I-beams is thinner than H-beams. H-beams have greater web thickness compared to I-beams. This increased thickness gives strength to H-beams.
The flanges of I-beams are tapered with an inclination of 1:10 for better load-bearing capacity. Their thickness is less than that of H-beam flanges. The flanges of H-beams have equal thickness and are parallel to each other. They are longer, wider, and heavier than I-beams.
The cross-section of I-beams is typically deeper in height than its width, which gives them resistance against local buckling. The cross-section of H-beams is more optimized than I-beams, giving it a reasonable strength-to-weight ratio, i.e., more strength per unit area. They possess a greater surface area on the cross-section, hence high strength.
