SM490 steel is a very commonly used hot rolled structural steel in Korea. One of the important factors contributing to the use of steel is its low cost and excellence in machinability and weldability In current usage of SM490, welding has been widely used to connect steel members due to such advantages as design simplicity and high rigidity. However, the inhomogeneity of microstructures in the weld zone could lead to the changes in the mechanical properties and generate a local stress concentration, which could extensively initiate crack propagation [3]. It has been reported that during the welding, the solid-state phase transformations have a strong influence on the final microstructure and affect mechanical properties such as hardness and toughness in the weld zone of the structural steel  However, these effects on the basic mechanical properties in SM490 steel weld zone, such as elastic modulus E, yield strength σy, and strain hardening exponent n, have rarely been reported so far. Thus, it is quite significant to have a comprehensive study of the mechanical properties including elastic modulus, yield strength, and strain hardening exponent in weld zone of SM490 steel.
