S355 is a normalizing steel (fine grain steel) in EN10025-3:2004 standard. Its yield strength and tensile strength correspond to the Q345 low alloy steel in China Q275, is a kind of carbon structural steel, with high strength, good plasticity and cutting performance, certain welding performance, small parts can be quenched and strengthened, mostly used in the manufacture of parts requiring high strength, such as gears, shafts, sprockets, keys, bolts, nuts, agricultural machinery steel, conveyor chains and chain joints.

Comparison of S275 and S355 structural steel

The mechanical characteristics of the two steels mainly differ in the higher yield strength of S355 steel compared to S275 structural steel. Furthermore, the mechanical strength of S355 steel is higher than that of the S275 type. For a member thickness up to 40mm, the ultimate rupture stress of the S355 structural steel assumes a value of 510 N/sq mm while for the S275 type it is equal to 430 N/sq mm. These mechanical strengths increase with the carbon content present in the material and decrease with the increase in the thickness of the members.

Structural steel S275 has the same ductility as type S355. Ductility decreases as the thickness of the members increases.

Overall, both S275 structural steel and S355 construction steel have good mechanical strength and versatility of use.

S355 steel has a higher price than the S275 type. Despite this price difference, S355 structural steel is often preferred due to its lower structural weight compared to S275 type. It is also better when it is necessary to reach predetermined values of mechanical characteristics in the presence of overall weight limits.
