317L 317LMN steel iron angle
Alloys 317LMN and 317L are molybdenum-containing austenitic stainless steels that offer better resistance to chemical attack than conventional chromium-nickel austenitic stainless steels such as alloy 304. In addition, in high temperature environments, alloys 317LMN Stainless Steel Angle and 317L have greater fracture stress strength and better ductility than conventional stainless steels. All are low carbon grades or "L" grades, which provide resistance to sensitization during welding and other heat treatments.
"M" and "N" refer to the presence of incremental amounts of molybdenum and nitrogen in the composition. The combination of molybdenum and nitrogen contributes to pitting and crevice corrosion resistance, especially in high-temperature environments containing acidic compounds, chlorides and sulfides. Nitrogen also contributes to the strength of these alloys.
Corrosion Resistance
Alloys 317L and 317LMN stainless steels are more resistant to atmospheric and other mild corrosion than conventional chromium-nickel stainless steels. In general, environments that are not corrosive to 18Cr-8Ni steels will not cause corrosion of molybdenum-containing alloys, with the exception of strong oxidizing acids (e.g., nitric acid).
Alloy 317LMN Stainless Steel Angle and 317L Stainless Steel Angle Iron are more resistant to corrosion from sulfuric acid solutions than conventional chromium-nickel stainless steels. Their corrosion resistance increases with increasing molybdenum content of the alloy. These alloys will resist sulfuric acid concentrations of up to 5% at temperatures up to 120°F (49°C). At temperatures below 100°F (38°C), these alloys have excellent corrosion resistance to more concentrated solutions.
