The mechanical and physical properties of aluminum are enhanced with the use of alloying elements. These alloying elements are often called hardeners. Aluminum-based master alloys with hardeners provide high concentrations of elements, providing a convenient and economical way to add them to aluminum to achieve desired properties.
Zirconium is added to certain aluminum-magnesium alloys, such as 7050, to reduce stress corrosion susceptibility. Adding 0.1 ~ 0.3% zirconium will form fine intermetallic particle precipitation, inhibiting recovery and recrystallization. Zirconium is added to aluminum-zinc-magnesium alloys to increase the temperature and control the grain structure in the recrystallized deformed alloy.
